BIG RIVER MAN
"In February 2007 Martin Strel began an insane attempt to be the first person to swim the entire length of the world’s most dangerous river, the mighty Amazon. Martin is an endurance swimmer from Slovenia, who swims rivers - the Mississippi, the Danube and the Yangtze to date - to highlight their pollution to the world. Martin is also a rather overweight, horseburger loving Slovenian in his fifties who drinks two bottles of red wine a day… even when swimming. As Manohla Dargis wrote in her NY Times Sundance wrap-up: 'The pivotal figure in the excellent American documentary Big River Man... has so much personality it’s a wonder he fits on the screen.'” (http://stfdocs.com/films/big_river_man)
Big River Man was the winner of the World Cinema Cinematography Award at Sundance Film Festival (2009) and the Wouter Barendrecht Award for Pioneering Vision at the Hamptons International Film Festival (2009).

PERFORMING REVOLUTION IN CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPE
"Performing Revolution in Central and Eastern Europe explores the contributions of the performing arts to the 1989 revolutions and resulting fall of Communism in Central and Eastern Europe. Presented by The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts in association with leading cultural organizations and academic institutions, the five-month festival features more than 25 events, including theater, music, and dance performances, exhibitions, film screenings, readings, and symposia.
With a focus on the performing arts in the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia, the festival considers “revolution” not only within the framework of the era’s profound social and political changes, but also in terms of ongoing experiments within a particular genre. From revivals of significant works from the period to new projects that reflect upon the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Iron Curtain and beyond, Performing Revolution is a celebration of the transformative power of the arts and their potential to reshape political and cultural systems." REVOLUTIONARY VOICES: PERFORMING ARTS IN CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPE IN THE 1980s
"Presented by The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, this exhibition examines how performances [in the Czech Republic, Germany, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia] attempted to break boundaries set by the Communist state’s politicians and censors, focusing on theater, music, and dance events that contested the prevailing totalitarian regime and anticipated the forthcoming political and social changes. As the revolutions in most Soviet bloc countries were not the result of a violent overthrow of power, art was one of the main arenas where “the revolutionary” started to happen. Curated by Karen Burke, Assistant Chief, Music Division, The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts and Aniko Szucs, Ph.D. candidate in Performance Studies at New York University.
This exhibit is a part of Performing Revolution in Central and Eastern Europe.
The gallery hours are Monday and Thursday 12:00-8:00pm; Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday 11:00am-6:00pm; Saturday 10:00am-6:00pm. This event is free of charge.
