PERFORMING REVOLUTION IN CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPE

"Performing Revolution in Central and Eastern Europe explores the contributions of the performing arts to the 1989 revolutions and resulting fall of Communism in Central and Eastern Europe.  Presented by The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts in association with leading cultural organizations and academic institutions, the five-month festival features more than 25 events, including theater, music, and dance performances, exhibitions, film screenings, readings, and symposia.

With a focus on the performing arts in the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia, the festival considers “revolution” not only within the framework of the era’s profound social and political changes, but also in terms of ongoing experiments within a particular genre.  From revivals of significant works from the period to new projects that reflect upon the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Iron Curtain and beyond, Performing Revolution is a celebration of the transformative power of the arts and their potential to reshape political and cultural systems."  (www.performingrevolution.org

DRAGAN ŽIVADINOV, DUNJA ZUPANČIČ, AND MIHA TURŠIČ
POSTGRAVITY ART: SYNTAPIENS

"Signifying the 50-year time span of their multimedia theatre project, Dragan Živadinov, Dunja Zupančič, and Miha Turšič will stage a 50-hour event at Eyebeam. The performers will take the audience on a journey through the concepts of “theatre in zero-gravity” starting with the first “informance” on November 10 and continuing with hourly events through to November 12, which can be viewed during gallery hours and followed on Eyebeam's website and Twitter site.

The November 10 "informance" will be a performative event combining live actors and multiple video projections, leading the audience through the myth of Postgravity Art and its historical influences: Trieste Constructivistic Ambiente, 1927; Malevich's Planits, 1920; and Herman Potočnik Noordung, 1928. The succeeding events in the 50-hour cycle will present a selected array of topics related to the concept of Postgravity Art. Through gallery talks and audience interaction, in the Eyebeam gallery and in virtual space, audiences can expect a grand tour of work-life between Ljubljana and Star City, in search of the code of Zero Gravity."  (www.eyebeam.org

This event is a part of Performing Revolution in Central and Eastern Europe and the PERFORMA09 biennial performance art festival.

Tickets are $10 and may be purchased in advance through the Eyebeam website or at the gallery on the day of the event.

REVOLUTIONARY VOICES:  PERFORMING ARTS IN CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPE IN THE 1980s

"Presented by The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, this exhibition examines how performances [in the Czech Republic, Germany, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia] attempted to break boundaries set by the Communist state’s politicians and censors, focusing on theater, music, and dance events that contested the prevailing totalitarian regime and anticipated the forthcoming political and social changes. As the revolutions in most Soviet bloc countries were not the result of a violent overthrow of power, art was one of the main arenas where “the revolutionary” started to happen. Curated by Karen Burke, Assistant Chief, Music Division, The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts and Aniko Szucs, Ph.D. candidate in Performance Studies at New York University.

This exhibit is a part of Performing Revolution in Central and Eastern Europe.

The gallery hours are Monday and Thursday 12:00-8:00pm; Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday 11:00am-6:00pm; Saturday 10:00am-6:00pm.  This event is free of charge.
